Wind Spinner a Hit at Backyard Social Functions

Wind Spinner

by Lizz Cassidy

What would summer be without barbeques? You know the kind I’m talking about, with the whole neighbourhood invited, sitting out on the back deck with good friends and good food. In times like these, I’ve found it’s always nice to have items that spark conversation and add a little bit more atmosphere to your backyard. (Plus, who doesn’t want to have that one cool item that everyone will rave about? Who knows, you could be the one starting the next big trend in your neighbourhood!)

Wind Spinners

What I’ve recently found is a garden accessory called a Wind Spinner, and it’s just the neatest little thing.  I normally have it hanging out on my back patio, and have spent hours on end just watching it while I relaxed. It’s similar to a pinwheel, in that when the wind blows, the Wind Spinner rotates. And when the Wind Spinner rotates, it creates an optical illusion.

You see, these Wind Spinners are made from shiny steel and painted bright colours (they’ve got reds, blues, purples, greens, even copper and silver), then they are cut and shaped in a way that when they spin, light bounces off different parts of the Wind Spinner, and it looks like the image in the center is growing and contracting all the time. It’s so entrancing and relaxing to just sit there and watch not only how the Wind Spinner seems to change sizes, but also how the light plays over it.

I could not believe how many different designs there were for me to choose from either – there’s practically a different design for every interest or passion you could have, whether you’re really patriotic, love animals, or are a big hockey fan. There are even a couple of styles of Wind Spinners that are 3D, which are a lot of fun because you can bend the shape in the centre at different angles, so it reacts to the light in completely different ways.

Another thing that I really like about these is that they are completely weatherproof, so I don’t have to worry about the colour fading over time. It sat outside all this past summer, and the colour hadn’t faded one bit when I wanted to bring it in for the fall and winter. When it came around to the time when I had to bring it in, I didn’t want to have to put it away so I couldn’t enjoy it for a whole season. I was able to find a motor for my Wind Spinner, which allowed me to hang it in front of a window, and even through the winter I could enjoy sitting down and watching it without having the window open to create a breeze in which to make it rotate. (Imagine how cold that would have been when it was snowing out!)

Needless to say, my Wind Spinner has sparked a lot of interest among friends and has provided me with something to watch while I sit back and relax.
